How EFCC Re-arrested Fani-Kayode In Lagos After Court Proceedings
iexclusive News Nigeria reports that following investigations into alleged document falsification, he was detained on Tuesday after attending a court hearing at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos.
This online news outlet gathered that according to sources close to him, he was not arrested, but rather re-invited by the anti-graft agency.
The EFCC has charged Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of State for Finance, Nenandi Usman, as well as Yusuf Danjuma, a former Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), and a company, Jointrust Dimensions Nigeria Ltd, with 17 counts of money laundering in violation of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012.
All defendants were present when the matter was presented in court on Tuesday.
The prosecution, led by Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, did not object to the letter of the absent first defense counsel.
He instead told the court that the prosecution was relieved that the court had deduced from the record that the second defendant (Fani Kayode) had repeatedly asked the court’s forgiveness.
He informed the court that the prosecution had lately uncovered that all of Fani-letters Kayode’s had been forgeries.
The court halted the prosecutor at this point, stating that it was an issue that the agency should dispose of before the court acted on the letters requesting an adjournment.
After the case was deferred to January 24, 2022, and the defendants walked out of court, drama ensued.
While Fani-Kayode was still standing in the court corridor, an EFCC investigator, Mr. Shehu Shuaibu, approached him with the prosecutor, and after a brief conversation, the defendant got into his car and followed the EFCC operatives to their office.
iexclusive News Nigeria also learned that Mr. Fani-Kayode was re-arrested and is in their custody for questioning over the bogus paperwork, according to an EFCC operative who confirmed this at the time of reporting this story.
The defendants were accused of committing the crimes between January and March 2015, according to the complaint.
This comes just days after Fani Kayode was arrested by the anti-graft agency. However, the former Minister denied being detained in a Facebook post, claiming that he was just invited and afterward “given bail on self-recognition.”.
