Alchemy of Souls Episode 19 Recap and Review: The King's Star Rises, A Storm Is On The Way
Alchemy of Souls (환혼) is a 2022 fantasy K-drama which is set in the imaginary world of Daeho.
The story revolves around young magicians who are to carry the burden of the past. Starring Lee Jae-wook, Jung So-min and Hwang Min-hyun, the show premiered on tvN on Jun 18, 2022.
The show will have 20 episodes and it takes over tvN’s Saturday-Sunday 9 PM KST timeslot previously occupied by Our Blues. Alchemy of Souls episode 19 has a runtime of 86 minutes.

Alchemy of Souls episode 19 starts off with the revelation of what had happened with Jin Bu-yeon all those years back.
Jin Woo-tak is suspicious that Jang Kang must be her father as he used the ice stone to save her but doesn’t resent her. He knows that it is because of her that he could marry into the Jin family and is only grateful.
However, Jin Mu knows who Jin Bu-yeon’s real father is and recalls him being a member of the Choi family which is the root of her immense divine powers. When Jin Bu-yeon is pushed into the lake by Jin Mu, she washes away onto a shore where she is adopted by an old village lady who names her Mu-deok.
Recalling the storm that took place when Jin Bu-yeon got her hands on the ice stone, Jin Mu is shocked upon seeing the same thing happen to Mu-deok.
At the training centre, Park Jin reveals that master Seo Gyeong had used the ice stone to save his lover but she chose to destroy it instead of using it. Jin Mu doesn’t believe that someone can do that but Park Jin tells him that she did what was right.

She did this to protect what must be protected and with this the scene shifts to when Mu-deok and Jang Uk come face to face in the secret room. While pointing the sword at Jang Uk she remembers the words of Jin Bu-yeon and gives up on getting her powers back.
On the banks of the lake, master Lee tells the solitude a person with the King’s Star has to face. With great power comes great responsibilities and this is a burden that they must carry.
In Gaema village, Jin Cho-yeon and Park Dang-gu have come to search for the real queen but they are shocked to find Jin Woo-tak there. Jin Woo-tak then makes the real queen drink a potion as he recalls how Jang Kang destroyed shaman Choi’s house. It was there that he found her family heirloom which was a book that contained the way to perform the alchemy of souls.
Back in Songrim, Jin Ho-kyung can’t help but think about how Mu-deok called out Mother to her when Park Jin manages to bring out the truth about the ice stone’s disappearance from Jinyowon. Park Jin then tells his plan of rectifying their past mistakes and coming out clean once and for all.
Park Dang-gu and Jin Cho-yeon who had followed Jin Woo-tak, hear him reveal the truth about the queen and So Yi which leaves the two shocked. He then tries to kill the queen who is in shaman Choi’s body but is unable to go against his daughter which makes him give up.

Elsewhere, Jang Kang is back and Kim Do-ju gives him the letter left behind by master Lee.
Back in Jeonjingak, Heo Yoon-ok lets everyone know about Seo Yul’s condition while the crown prince goes to check up on Mu-deok and Jang Uk.
Finding the secret room empty with only the body of the soul shifter, he sends someone to find the two.
Elsewhere, Jang Uk shares his idea to escape the barrier formed by the ice stone with Mu-deok.
Listening to him she realises that he could lose all his powers and may even put his life in danger.
She does not agree to this plan but Jang Uk tells her that Seo Yul needs to be saved.

So Yi is also worried about the blood loss experienced by Seo Yul and decides to give him the blood worm that carried the Jin family’s blood so that it can save his life.
Back in the training centre, Park Dong-gu tells Park Jin about the real queen and requests to bring her out only in front of the royal family, Songrim, Jinyowon and Cheonbugwan.
Though not happy, Park Jin does as requested and brings out the real queen in front of them all.

In Jeonjingak, Jang Uk tells his plan to the crown prince who calls him crazy, but the former tells him the words of his master (Mu-deok).
Mu-deok then brings Jang Uk his sword which shocks the crown prince but when she repeats the same words as Jang Uk’s master then he gets suspicious.
Park Jin on the other hand manages to trick shaman Choi into revealing her identity as she then threatens them with a knife on her neck which can kill the queen’s body.
She then calls them all evil but Park Jin tells her to surrender the queen’s body as well as herself in exchange for her brother’s life.
Jin Ho-kyung is shocked to find out that her husband is shaman Choi’s brother. Jin Woo-tak realises his sister’s situation and tells her to escape while killing himself in front of everyone.
This breaks the last straw for shaman Choi who then tries to take away the powers of the ice stone and kill everyone inside the barrier.
On the other hand, Jang Uk has also started his plan to break the barrier by giving it his powers and using Tansu on it.
Park Jin tries to stop her but the alchemy has already started as pillars of smoke escape from the roof and cause a whirlwind in the skies that seem to rush towards Jang Uk.
But right then Jang Kang arrives and stops the powers of the soul ejector by taking the brunt on himself, right in front of the training centre.

Heom Yeom recognises him and tries to take him in but when he sees his neck he realises that Jang Kang is a soul shifter. Inside the training centre, Park Jin is aware that someone must have stopped the powers of the soul ejector when Kang’s arrival lets him know who did it.
But when he tries to go towards him he is stopped by Heo Yeom who lets everyone know that Jang Kang is a soul shifter.
Jang Kang then accepts his crimes of performing the alchemy as well as taking away the ice stone from Jinyowon. He tells them that master Lee told him to accept his mistakes and punishment for his actions.
He accepts the death penalty for the crimes committed and the king approves of it. Heo Yeom tries to stop this for the reason Jang Uk is stuck inside Jeonjingak but Jang Kang once again lets everyone know that Jang Uk is not his son and therefore not connected to him.
He then strikes himself with a ball of energy and is reduced to dust in front of everyone’s eyes. Elsewhere, Jang Uk opens his eyes and finds himself in a heavenly-like space. He realises that he has lost his powers and then sees the ice stone near his feet.
He picks it up and calls it useless while being nothing more than a piece of rock for the current him.
But then the stone stars shining brightly as stars appear near his feet and upon zooming out we know that he is standing on none other than the King’s star that is shining brightly in the sky.

Everyone witnesses the rise of the King’s star as they all rejoice and rush towards Jeonjingak, while a confused Jang Uk is showered by the rain as the barrier falls. He is confused about what he just saw but is unable to share it with anyone.
As the crowd, along with Park Jin rush to Jeonjingak, they find the crown prince standing there and call out to him as being the one born with the King’s star.
Meanwhile, Park Jin notices Jang Uk in the side and knows the real person who saved everyone.
Jang Uk and Mu-deok look at each other as they both are now left powerless after having let go of the chance that was given to them. However, they are not sad as they know that they have each other.
Alchemy of Souls episode 19 ends with talks about an upcoming wedding are going around Daeho as the unexpected pair has left people everywhere speechless.
Elsewhere, Mu-deok says her final goodbye to Seo Yul before he prepares to leave for the Seoho fortress.
She then thanks him for hiding her truth from others and for always being the friend she had met in Danhyanggok.

She tells him to take care of himself and take his medicine even if it is bitter and he complies with her, telling her that no matter how bitter it is he will take the medicine.
In the Jang household, Park Dang-gu give Jang Uk a picture of his father and tells him how he saved Songrim, Jinyowon and Cheonbugwan.
Park Dong-gu finds it regretful that Jang Uk never got to his father, however, the latter reveals that he did meet him once.
In the palace, an order to find the escaping Jin Mu is issued, but the queen is not satisfied because Jang Uk is not punished.
Park Jin makes it clear that Jang Uk has been punished enough while the crown prince shares his regret of not being able to get to know about Jang Uk’s real father.
Later, Park Jin meets Kim Do-ju and the two know the real father of Jang Uk who is none other than the late king because of the things left behind by Jang Kang. But the two have decided to not let anyone reveal this truth.

In Cheonbugwan, the crown prince finds the hiding Jin Mu who reveals that Jang Uk is the real King’s star and that only Jin Mu himself can save the crown prince.
In Chwiseonru, Mu-deok is made to try on the bride’s wedding dress to check the fitting when Jang Uk arrives and compliments her.
He then reminds her that this is where the two first met and makes her sit down before formally asking her to not be his master anymore.
When Mu-deok frees this pupil of hers, he then proposes to her to get married.

This is just the calm before the storm and we can expect a major cliffhanger after the finale that will make us cry until the show returns in December.
Episode 19, as always, blew my mind away and did not disappoint any of us for sure.

With scene after scene being filled with revelations, the episode was jam-packed and has made for endless theories.
This episode lets us know that Jin Mu is an encyclopedia of every secret in Daeho because he is the one who let us know that Jin Bu-yeon’s real father is a member of the Choi family.
He knows every single secret there is to know and this guy really never fails to disappoint.

And Jang Kang really did prove that he is just a guest character who will build up so much hope from the fans only to die at the end of it all.
Why! This character has made me so distressed that I don’t even want to speak about it.
Though, I have to say that he must have been really awesome to not just have Park Jin be sad about his death but also make Jin Mu distressed.
Jang Uk on the other hand just keeps getting more amazing episode after episode and having him stand among the stars was definitely the right choice. And I have to say that his way of proposing to Mu-deok was really smooth.

I have a feeling that the crown prince will not join hands with Jin Mu because of the talk that he must have had with Jang Uk.
He knows that Jang Uk is no threat to him, especially after he gave the crown prince the King’s star spotlight.

Lastly, thank you writers for giving us such a beautiful closure of Seo Yul and Naksu’s story that moved us to tears.
Their goodbye has to be one of the most beautiful scenes that we’ve ever seen and taught us that something so sad can be so beautiful.
