iexclusivenews reports that Michael Miller urged “creators of original journalism and content” to avoid the past errors that “decimated their industries.”

The most well-known chatbot is ChatGPT-4 by AI company OpenAI, which is software that consumes news, data, and other information to produce responses to queries that mimic written or spoken human speech.

Miller claims that the quick development of generative AI is a further attempt by influential digital companies to find “a new pot of gold to maximise revenues and profit by taking the creative content of others without compensating them for their original work.”

Miller used OpenAI as an example, saying that by “using the others’ original content and creativity without remuneration and attribution,” the company “quickly established a business” worth $30 billion.

The News Media Bargaining Code, which was put into effect by the Australian federal government in 2021, requires tech platforms operating in Australia to compensate news publishers for the news content they make available or link to on their platforms.

Miller argues that similar regulations are required for AI to ensure that all content producers are fairly compensated for their efforts.

“Creators deserve to be rewarded for their original work being used by AI engines which are raiding the style and tone of not only journalists but (to name a few) musicians, authors, poets, historians, painters, filmmakers and photographers.”

With “profound risks to society and humanity,” more than 2,600 tech industry leaders and researchers recently signed an open letter urging a temporary halt to further artificial intelligence (AI) development.

The data protection watchdog in Italy announced a temporary block of ChatGPT and opened an investigation into possible violations of data privacy laws.

In contrast to outright bans or blocks on the technology, Miller thinks an agreement can be advantageous for both AI companies and content producers.

He said that with “appropriate guardrails,” AI has the potential to become a valuable resource for journalists.

It can help with content creation, “gather facts faster,” and speed up video production in addition to assisting with publishing across multiple platforms.

Though it is still in its infancy, the cryptocurrency sector is beginning to see more projects that employ AI.

If AI engines can’t persuade the public that the information they are providing is reliable and credible.

Miller believes they run the risk of jeopardising their ability to succeed in the future.

“To achieve this, they will have to fairly compensate those who provide the substance for their success,” Miller says.
