After a 2-2 draw with Liverpool, Arsenal’s problems at Anfield worsen

Arsenal was beaten to a 2-2 draw by Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, dropping two ‘priceless’ points.

Arteta’s men are six points clear of Manchester City at the top of the league, but the reigning champions now control their own destiny.

City has a game in hand and will play Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium later this month.

Arsenal seemed to be racing to an eighth consecutive league win after goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus.

Yet Mohamed Salah scored just before halftime to ignite a Liverpool comeback.

Salah missed a penalty in the second half before Roberto Firmino equalized three minutes from time.

Arsenal custodian Aaron Ramsdale saved a draw for his team after Jurgen Klopp’s players wasted a succession of opportunities to complete the comeback.

“We lacked the ruthlessness to win the game,” Arteta stated. “The key lesson is that we didn’t play as we did in the first half.”

“We didn’t keep playing. We threw every ball away, gave the best team in the world vast gaps and tremendous transition periods.”

The game will also be remembered for a stunning incident immediately after halftime when assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis smashed an elbow into the face of Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson.

Arsenal has not won an away league game against Liverpool since 2012, as they fell short of one of the primary obstacles to the championship despite a flawless start.
