Ban on Indomie Noodles Due to Ethylene Oxide Content, a Carcinogen

Due to their deadly Ethylene Oxide content, Indomie Noodles have been outlawed in two nations.
According to Glamtush, Indofood, the manufacturer of the well-known Indomie instant noodles, has come under fire after having its products banned in Malaysia and Taiwan due to elevated cancer risk levels.

The Department of Health in Taiwan’s capital Taipei issued a statement stating that “the detection of ethylene oxide in the product did not comply with [standards]”.

Taufik Wiraatmadja, a member of Indofood’s board of directors, responded to the accusations by defending the safety of the noodles and claiming that all of the company’s products are produced in accordance with international standards for food safety and hold standard certifications.

According to a statement from Wiraatmadja, “All instant noodles manufactured by ICBP in Indonesia are processed in line with the food safety requirements stipulated by the Indonesian National Agency for Drug and Food Control (‘BPOM RI’) and the Codex Standard for Instant Noodles.

Our instant noodles are made in certified production facilities that adhere to international standards and have acquired Indonesian National Standard Certification (SNI).

However, the Malaysian Ministry of Health revealed that it had tested 36 samples of instant noodles from different brands since 2022, and that ethylene oxide had been detected in 11 of those samples.

It has therefore implemented enforcement measures and recalled the impacted products. If other brands were involved, it’s unclear.

Consumers who depend on instant noodles as a quick and practical supper alternative are concerned about this ban.

Health authorities continue to stress the value of food safety laws in protecting customers as Indofood deals with the effects of the ban.
