How China’s Digital Yuan is Revolutionizing the Future of Money

China is leading the world in developing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) Digital Yuan that could transform the way people pay, save and invest.

The digital yuan, also known as e-CNY, is a digital version of China’s national currency that is issued and controlled by the People’s Bank of China (PBOC).

Since its pilot launch in January 2022, the digital yuan has been used for nearly $250 billion worth of transactions across various sectors and regions in China, according to PBOC governor Yi Gang.

As of June 2023, there were about 120 million digital yuan wallets with a total circulation of 16.5 billion yuan ($2.3 billion), which accounts for only 0.16% of China’s monetary supply.

What Are The Benefits Of The Digital Yuan?

The digital yuan is designed to offer several advantages over traditional payment methods, such as:

Faster and cheaper transactions: The digital yuan can be transferred peer-to-peer without intermediaries, reducing transaction costs and delays. It can also be used offline in case of network disruptions.

Financial inclusion: The digital yuan can be accessed by anyone with a smartphone, regardless of their bank account status or credit history. It can also help rural and remote areas access financial services more easily.

Monetary Policy: The digital yuan can give the PBOC more granular control over money supply and inflation, as well as more data on economic activity and consumer behavior. It can also help combat money laundering, tax evasion and fraud.

Global influence: The digital yuan can enhance China’s role in the global financial system and reduce its dependence on the US dollar. It can also facilitate cross-border trade and investment with other countries, especially those involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.

How is the digital yuan different from other cryptocurrencies?

The digital yuan is not a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin or Ethereum, which are decentralized and operate on public blockchains. Rather, it is a centralized and sovereign digital currency that operates on a private blockchain controlled by the PBOC.

Unlike cryptocurrencies, which are volatile and speculative, the digital yuan is stable and backed by the full faith and credit of the Chinese government. It is also legal tender in China, unlike cryptocurrencies, which are banned or restricted in many countries.

The digital yuan is also different from other CBDCs that are being developed or explored by other countries, such as the digital euro or the digital dollar. While most CBDCs are still in the research or testing phase, the digital yuan is already in widespread use and adoption in China.

How can you use the digital yuan?

To use the digital yuan, you need to download a digital wallet app from one of the authorized banks or payment platforms, such as Alipay or WeChat Pay.

You can then link your bank account or debit card to your wallet and exchange your physical yuan for digital yuan at a 1:1 ratio.

You can then use your digital wallet to pay for goods and services at participating merchants, either by scanning a QR code or tapping your phone near a point-of-sale device.

You can also send and receive digital yuan to and from other users with just their phone number or wallet ID.

Some of the places where you can use the digital yuan include:

Retail stores: You can buy groceries, clothes, electronics and more with the digital yuan at thousands of retail outlets across China, such as JD.com, Carrefour, Starbucks and McDonald’s.

Public services: You can pay for public transportation, utilities, health care and education with the digital yuan at various government agencies and institutions, such as subway stations, hospitals and schools.

Online platforms: You can shop online, order food delivery, stream music and videos, play games and more with the digital yuan on popular platforms like Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu and ByteDance.

Cross-border payments: You can send and receive money internationally with the digital yuan through pilot programs with Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and other countries.

How to get started with the digital yuan?

If you are interested in trying out the digital yuan, you may have to wait for an official launch or an invitation from one of the participating banks or platforms.

The PBOC has not announced a timeline for a nationwide rollout of the digital yuan yet.

However, you may have a chance to get some free digital yuan through periodic lottery events that are held in various cities in China.

These events distribute millions of “red packets” containing 200 yuan ($29) each to randomly selected residents who sign up online.

The winners can then spend their digital yuan at designated merchants within a limited time period.

Alternatively, you may be able to buy some digital yuan from third-party platforms or individuals who are willing to sell them.

However, this may not be legal or safe, as the PBOC has warned against unauthorized trading of the digital yuan.
