Just In: Algeria Steps In To End Niger Coup

Iexclusivenews Nigeria reports that the countries in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) haven’t been able to find a solution for the crisis in the Republic of Niger. However, Algeria seems to have a better solution.

Earlier, it was reported that ECOWAS had given a seven-day ultimatum to the military junta in Niger, demanding the restoration of constitutional government by returning power to ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. So far, this ultimatum hasn’t produced any results.

But Algerian foreign minister, Ahmed Attaf, during his mediation tour to the West African country stated that, “most of the countries we have talked to are against military intervention to end the crisis”.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, leading the West African bloc, suggested a military intervention for the Niger crisis. However, this idea was turned down by other African nations.

Algeria strongly opposed the military approach put forward by ECOWAS. In Niger, the junta under Gen Abdourahamane Tchiani received support from Russia.

Algeria pointed out that a military solution might not be suitable, drawing attention to NATO’s involvement in Libya in 2011, which led to the forceful removal of their leader, Muammar Gaddafi.

Attaf revealed that they engaged in discussions with the coup leaders in Niger. Gen Tchiani, their leader, expressed interest in a transition period of up to three years.

Contrarily, Algeria expressed its intention to propose a United Nations (UN) conference. The aim is to reinstate constitutional order, ensure guarantees for all parties involved in the crisis, and host a development conference for the Sahel region.
