Breaking News: Former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele Remanded in Kuje Prison

ABUJA, (iexclusivenews) – The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been ordered by a Federal High Court in Abuja to be remanded in Kuje Correctional facility until his bail application is decided.

Emefiele Faces Six-Count Charge of Corruption

Emefiele was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a six-count amended charge of corruption, money laundering and abuse of office.

He is accused of diverting billions of naira from the CBN to his personal accounts and those of his cronies.

Emefiele pleaded not guilty to the charges and his counsel, Mathew Burkaa, SAN, moved an application for his bail.

However, the EFCC counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, opposed the bail application on behalf of the Federal Government.

He argued that Emefiele was a flight risk and could tamper with evidence and witnesses if granted bail.

Judge Adjourns Case Till November 22, 2023

The presiding judge, Justice Hamza Muazu, said he needed some time to study the exhibits supplied by Emefiele to support his request for bail.

He therefore adjourned the case till November 22, 2023 and ordered that Emefiele be remanded in Kuje Correctional facility pending the ruling on his bail application.
