(iexclusivenews) – Laura Lynch, one of the founding members of the country music group The Dixie Chicks, passed away in a tragic car accident in Texas on Friday. She was 65 years old.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Lynch was driving eastbound on U.S. 62, a highway that connects El Paso and Carlsbad, when she collided with another car that was trying to overtake another vehicle on a two-lane section of the road.
The accident happened around 5:45 p.m. local time on Friday.
Lynch died at the scene of the crash, police said. They also said she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the impact.
The other car burst into flames and the driver was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Laura Lynch was a founding member of The Dixie Chicks, along with sisters Martie and Emily Erwin, in 1989.
The band, which later changed its name to The Chicks in 2020, expressed their grief and condolences in a statement.
“We are shocked and saddened by the news of Laura’s death. She was a part of our musical family and we will always cherish the memories we made with her,” the statement read.
“Laura Lynch was a bright light who brought joy and laughter to everyone she met. She had a passion for design, a love of all things Texas and a talent for music that helped us grow from playing on street corners to performing on stages across Texas and the mid-West.”
Lynch was the lead vocalist and bassist of the band until 1995, when she left the group and was replaced by Natalie Maines.
She sang on the band’s first two albums,Thank Heavens for Dale Evans and Little Ol’ Cowgirl, which featured a mix of bluegrass, country and folk influences.

Laura Lynch also co-wrote some of the band’s early songs, such as “I Can Love You Better” and “You Were Mine”.
Lynch continued to pursue her solo career after leaving the band, releasing two albums, New Day and Moonlighter.
She also collaborated with other artists, such as Ray Benson, Albert Lee and John Jorgenson.
Laura Lynch is survived by her husband, Larry, and her daughter, Chelsea.
