DELTA, (iexclusivenews) – Ughelli, a town in Delta State, Nigeria, is witnessing a massive protest by hundreds of Nigerian youths who are fed up with the rampant police brutality and extortion that they face on a daily basis.
A video of the protest, which was shared by @KomeNicee shows the angry youths chanting slogans and holding placards that urge the authorities of the Nigeria Police Force, the Police Service Commission, and “all lovers of the country” to take action against the rogue police officers who have become “armed robbers in uniform” with the support of corrupt senior officers who share in their ill-gotten gains.
The video was posted on X by @KomeNicee, who expressed her frustration with the situation in the state.
She wrote:
“Heavy protest ongoing in Ughelli against police brutality which has become rampant!!”
However, the Delta State Police Command has issued a stern warning to the youths to stop the protest, claiming that it will not affect their duty to uphold the law.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Edafe Bright, gave an account of the incident that sparked the protest.
He said: “The Command wishes to inform the public that yesterday 13th February 2024, policemen from Ughelli Area Command intercepted an unregistered Benz GLK without a plate number in Ekuigbo community. The officers questioned the four boys who were in the car, but they could not prove ownership of the vehicle.
“When the officers tried to arrest them, some of the youths attacked the police, vandalized their vehicle, and injured one of the officers on the head.”
Edafe added that nine of the assailants were arrested and would be prosecuted.
He also advised the youths to refrain from any protest, saying “it won’t deter us from doing our job.”
