iexclusivenews – Guinea is under the rule of a military junta that took over the country in a coup last year. The junta has announced that it has abolished the government and closed the borders.

Junta Announces Dissolution of Government

On Monday, the junta’s Secretary General, Brig Gen Amara Camara, read a presidential decree on state TV, declaring that the government had been dissolved.

He did not give any explanation for the decision or indicate when a new government would be formed.

The ministers of the dissolved government were told to hand over their passports and official cars. Their bank accounts were also frozen.

The junta ordered the security forces to “seal” the country’s borders until the junta had taken full control of the state ministries.

In the meantime, lower-level officials would run the ministries temporarily, Mr Camara said.

The ousted government was headed by Bernard Goumou, who was appointed as prime minister by the junta’s leader, Mamady Doumbouya.

In September 2021, Col Doumbouya led a group of soldiers to overthrow the elected President, Alpha Condé, who had sparked protests by seeking a third term in office.

Guinea is one of several countries in West and central Africa that have experienced coups in recent years. Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Gabon are some of the others.

The coups have been met with strong criticism from the regional bloc Ecowas, as well as the African Union and the UN.

Junta Promises Elections in 10 Months

The junta has agreed to hold elections to restore democracy in 10 months, following a 24-month transition period that was negotiated with Ecowas.

The junta has also pledged to respect human rights and the rule of law, and to fight corruption and poverty.

However, some observers have expressed doubts about the junta’s commitment to democracy and reform, and have called for more international pressure and monitoring..
