ABUJA, (iexclusivenews) – In a startling turn of events, Nadeem Anjarwalla, a Binance executive held for tax evasion among other charges in Nigeria, has reportedly fled from custody.
This incident occurred shortly after he was permitted to observe Ramadan prayers, leading to a nationwide manhunt.
On March 22, 2024, Anjarwalla, aged 38, managed to elude authorities from an Abuja-based guest house where he was under detention with another colleague.
The escape was facilitated post-prayer at a nearby mosque, a concession granted in respect of the holy month of Ramadan.

Immigration officials believe Anjarwalla utilized a Kenyan passport to depart from Abuja, sparking inquiries into the passport’s acquisition, especially since no other travel documents were found with him at the time of arrest, barring a British passport.
Sources reveal that Anjarwalla enjoyed several liberties while detained, including access to communication devices—a privilege he may have used to orchestrate his escape.
Zakari Mijinyawa, Head of Strategic Communication at the Office of the National Security Adviser, promised to investigate the matter further but has not provided an update as of this report.
Anjarwalla, alongside Tigran Gambaryan, was detained on February 26, 2024.
Following Binance’s non-compliance with a court order to share Nigerian user data, their remand was extended to prevent evidence tampering. The case is adjourned until April 4, 2024.
On the same day as the escape, the Nigerian government filed additional charges against Binance Holdings Limited and the two executives.
The charges include failing to register with Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service and neglecting to deduct Value Added Taxes, which are serious offenses under Nigerian law.
This incident has not only caused a stir in the crypto community but also highlighted the complexities of international business compliance and the challenges faced by global entities operating in diverse regulatory landscapes.
