Nigeria to Get Oil-Backed $1.05 Billion Afreximbank Loan in May
iexclusivenews – Nigeria is poised for a significant economic uplift with the impending disbursement of a $1.05 billion oil-backed loan from the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank).
This financial injection is part of a strategic initiative to rejuvenate Nigeria’s economy and alleviate the persistent shortage of foreign exchange.
The loan, which is scheduled for disbursement in May, represents a segment of a broader $3.3 billion facility.
It is designed to bolster the economy and enhance the availability of foreign currency.
The terms of repayment are uniquely structured, with crude oil cargoes from the National Petroleum Company serving as collateral, reflecting a novel approach to addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges.

Afreximbank’s commitment to Nigeria’s economic stability is evident, with two-thirds of the loan already allocated earlier this year.
The remaining funds are set to follow, backed by verified crude oil reserves, ensuring a steady flow of capital based on future oil production.
Under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria has embarked on ambitious reforms to combat the long-standing issue of foreign exchange scarcity.
These include eradicating a massive backlog of foreign exchange demands and implementing policies to liberalize the naira’s value, coupled with significant interest rate adjustments.
Beyond Nigeria, Afreximbank is also finalizing support for the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, connecting Uganda’s oil fields to Tanzania’s coastal facilities.
Despite environmental concerns, the project is anticipated to be a game-changer for regional trade dynamics.
Aiming for a 53% growth in its loan portfolio, Afreximbank is set to reach up to $40 billion by year’s end.
This growth trajectory underscores the bank’s dedication to fostering trade and development across Africa, with the Nigerian oil sector playing a key role in this vision.
Denys Denya, the bank’s Senior Executive Vice President, highlights the importance of the upcoming loan disbursement, which is predicated on the availability of crude oil.
This forward-thinking financial strategy is set to provide immediate economic relief and bolster regional trade.
