Bobrisky Sentenced to Six-Month Jail Term for Naira Abuse

iexclusivenews – In a landmark ruling, the Federal High Court in Lagos has handed down a six-month prison sentence to Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, a figure who has sparked considerable debate due to his cross-dressing.

The sentence comes without the possibility of a fine and is in response to charges of disrespecting the Nigerian currency, the naira.

A Deterrent for Currency Abuse

Justice Abimbola Awogboro emphasized that the sentence should act as a warning against the mistreatment of the national currency.

The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of preserving the dignity of the naira.

During the proceedings, when questioned about his gender identity, Bobrisky affirmed his male identity.

He will serve his sentence at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, starting from the date of his arrest on March 24, 2024.

Charges and Conviction

Bobrisky on his way to prison

Bobrisky faced a four-count charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to which he pleaded guilty.

The charges detailed instances of him spraying naira notes—a violation of the Central Bank Act—during various social events throughout 2022 and 2023.

Originally set for sentencing on April 5, the court had to postpone the decision due to a public holiday for Eid-El-Fitri celebrations, further highlighting the case’s prominence in the public eye.

The court’s ruling sends a clear message about the legal boundaries surrounding the treatment of the Nigerian currency and serves as a precedent for similar cases in the future.

The case has not only legal but also cultural implications, considering Bobrisky’s controversial status in Nigerian society.
