Nnamdi Kanu Set To Negotiate with FG

ABUJA, (iexclusivenews) – The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has taken a significant step in his legal battle. In a surprising move, he expressed his intention to seek negotiation with the Federal Government.

This development comes amidst the backdrop of his prolonged detention and the terrorism-related charges he faces.

The Legal Landscape

Kanu’s lead counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, conveyed this decision during proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The legal basis for this negotiation lies in Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act, which empowers the court to promote reconciliation among parties and facilitate amicable settlements.

Ejimakor had previously presented two applications before the court.

The first sought to move form 49, while the second challenged the court’s jurisdiction.

If these applications are denied, Kanu’s legal team intends to invoke Section 17 to explore negotiation avenues.

The Government’s Response

In response, Adegboyega Awomolo, representing the federal government, clarified that he lacks the authority to negotiate on behalf of the government.

Instead, he advised Kanu to approach the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagnei (SAN), who holds the requisite negotiation powers.

Justice Binta Nyako, presiding over the case, emphasized that the court’s role is not that of a solicitor but rather to adjudicate.

Her statement underscores the gravity of the trial and the need for a fair and impartial process.

The Detained Leader

Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, remains a central figure in the Biafra separatist movement. His arrest in Kenya triggered a series of events that led to the current legal battle.
