31 Northern Lawyers To Defend Abba Kyari

31 lawyers from the country’s north have expressed interest in representing Abba Kyari, the beleaguered Deputy Commissioner of Police who was recently suspended in connection with a $1.1 million scam involving an internet fraudster known as Hushpuppi.

iexclusive News Nigeria reports that Barrister Bappah Salisu, speaking on behalf of the 31 legal practitioners from 19 Northern States, revealed this on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the lawyers decided to provide free legal services to Abba Kyari in response to a call from the Coalition of Northern Groups, which urged that the besieged police chief’s fundamental human rights be respected.

And an indictment by a court in the United States of America following the discovery of Abba Kyari’s ties to Hushpuppi, the Northern group made the decision.

In response to the FBI’s decision to extradite Kyari to the United States, the group of lawyers claimed that the FBI did not follow proper procedure, claiming that they broke international etiquette.

“We would raise concerns about possible violations of Kyari’s fundamental rights, which are enshrined in Articles 6 and 7 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, which essentially state that every individual has the right to liberty and security of his person, as well as the right to have his case heard.

“This includes the right to file a complaint with competent national organs in the event that his fundamental rights are violated, as recognized and safeguarded by current conventions, laws, regulations, and customs.

The right to be presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a competent court or tribunal; the right to defense, including the right to be represented by counsel of his choice; and the right to be tried by an impartial court or tribunal within a reasonable time, according to the group.
