Liverpool Legend Ian ST John Dies At 82
iexclusive News Nigeria reports that Liverpool legend, icon, former ‘Saint and Greavsie’ host Ian St John has died at the age of 82.
St John was a legend and a liverpool iconic stricker. Ian had about 400 goals to his credit.
He will be remembered for his constant smiles, laughs and he was a good player.
He was born on 1938 and died today 2 march 2021
In a statement released via the Reds’ official website on Tuesday morning, the former Scotland forward’s family confirmed his passing on Monday evening following a long battle with illness.
“He passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside,” St John’s family said.
“We would like to thank all the staff at Arrowe Park Hospital for their hard work and dedication during these very difficult times.
“The family would be grateful for privacy at this extremely sad time.”
St John – who previously battled bladder cancer – scored 118 goals in 425 appearances for Liverpool under the iconic Bill Shankly between 1961-71, helping the club to return to the First Division as champions in 1962.
He netted 21 times in their shock 1963/64 First Division title success and won another league championship two seasons later in 1965/66 as Liverpool became a force to be reckoned with under Shankly.
St John also lifted the FA Cup with Liverpool in 1965, memorably heading home the extra-time winning goal as the Reds beat Leeds United 2-1 at Wembley Stadium to seal their very first triumph in the famous old competition.
He was part of the team that later lost narrowly to Borussia Dortmund in the 1966 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final at Hampden Park in Glasgow – Liverpool’s maiden European final.

St John also scored nine goals in 21 senior international caps for Scotland between 1959-65 and was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
His club career began at Motherwell and he also represented Coventry and Tranmere as well as South African sides Hellenic and Cape Town City before retiring in 1973.
After hanging up his boots, St John managed both Motherwell and Portsmouth before a successful career as a pundit that was most notable for the hugely popular ITV show ‘Saint and Greavsie’, which he hosted alongside England, Tottenham and Chelsea legend Jimmy Greaves between 1985-92
