Why Police Service Commission Rejected Magu’s Promotion

Ibrahim Magu, ex-acting chairman of Economic and Financial Crime Commission EFCC was denied promotion due to his pending case.

iexclusive News Nigeria reports that Magu was detained in July 2020 and summoned to testify before a presidential tribunal examining accusations of corruption and insubordination leveled against him by Nigeria’s justice minister, Abubakar Malami.

Magu and Malami have often clashed over the anti-corruption campaign, and many Nigerians, like Femi Odekunle, a member of a presidential anti-corruption council, think Magu’s experience is part of a power struggle with Malami.

Presidency Reaction over his denied promotion

President Muhammadu Buhari is not responsible for promotion in the Nigeria Police Force, the Presidency said on Thursday.

Garba Shehu, the President’s spokesperson, made the announcement soon after the Police Service Commission (PSC) elevated 24 Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIG).

However, Ibrahim Magu, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) previous interim head, was denied promotion.

Shehu responded to the incident by asserting that advancement within Nigeria’s police system is decided by the PSC and that President Buhari had no say in the matter.

“President Buhari, or any Nigerian President, is not accountable for police promotions.

“That is the Police Service Commission’s (PSC) responsibility.

“In the instance of the guy in issue, who is presently under investigation, common sense suggests that the result will decide his eligibility. The PSC could have provided you with the right stance on this if an attempt had been made to contact them,” Shehu said.
