UK sparked worries with Nigerian government over Nnamdi Kanu’s Abduction

The UK Parliament has demanded that the Nigerian government explain how and why Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, was rearrested in Kenya and extradited.

iexclusive News Nigeria reports that Lord Tariq Ahmad, the UK Minister of State for the Commonwealth, demanded that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration explain how it repatriated Kanu to the British government.

The decision came after a debate on the floor of the Parliament on July 7, 2021, during which legislators examined the UK government’s view of Kenya’s role in the incident.

Lord Alton (Liverpool) raised the subject in the House of Lords, attempting to address the controversies surrounding the relocation of the IPOB leader from the East African country to Nigeria against his will.

The legislator also inquired as to whether Kanu had received any aid from the High Commission in Abuja.

According to a parliamentary schedule, “Lord Alton of Liverpool to ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of (1) the alleged role of the Kenyan government in the detention and alleged mistreatment of Nigerian activist Nnamdi Kanu, (2) the circumstances surrounding Kanu’s transfer to Nigeria against his will, and (3) any assistance provided to him by the High Commission.”

Tariq Ahmad responded, saying, “We are seeking information from the Nigerian Government about the circumstances of Nnamdi Kanu’s arrest and detention.”

Furthermore, the Minister acknowledged previous claims that his country was giving consular aid to the IPOB leader.

“The UK has sought from the Nigerian government consular access to Kanu, and we stand ready to give consular assistance,” he said.

The Buhari administration has yet to explain how the IPOB leader was apprehended and returned to Nigeria.
