FG Makes U-turn, Set To Lift Ban On Twitter

Twitter has agreed to the majority of the terms set forth by the federal government, according to Information Minister Lai Mohammed.

iexclusive News Nigeria reports that the Nigerian government has said that the ban on Twitter will be lifted soon, as the microblogging service has agreed to open an office in the country.

On June 5, President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet was deleted, in which he vowed to deal with Igbos fomenting trouble in the “language they understand,” a reference to the civil war in which at least three million Igbos were slain.

Mr. Buhari’s tweet was taken down after hundreds of people complained that it was genocidal and so violated Twitter’s community code.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said the ban would be lifted soon after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.

Mr. Mohammed said that Twitter had agreed to the Nigerian government’s terms.

Civil society, activists, and certain media organizations have all spoken out against the Twitter ban, which has been challenged in court.
