AFCON 2021 – Asamoah Gyan, former Black Stars of Ghana striker predicted the Eagles’ victory while appearing as a guest and expert analyst on SuperSport’s talk show.
Gyan, a two-time AFCON silver medalist and one-time bronze medalist, praised Coach Austin Eguavoen‘s men, saying they are currently the standout team and potential champions in Cameroon.
“Yes, as of today, Nigeria stands out as the team with the will to conquer all oppositions based on what happened in the match against Egypt,” Gyan responded to the host’s question.
“Every other potential winner of the tournament appears to be playing too cautiously, which explains why most of the matches have been underwhelming.”
“But, when you look at Nigeria, they showed the character of a potential champion by dominating Egypt for the entire 90 minutes.”
Despite the absence of its first-choice attackers, the 36-year-old praised the country’s performance in the 1-0 win over Egypt.
“Nigeria deserved to score more goals in the game, but they were unlucky in the end.” This was a team that faced a pre-tournament challenge in that they were unable to bring some of their best forwards to the tournament, and playing a strong team like Egypt in the first match was an acid test that they passed with flying colors.”
Gyan, who led Ghana to the final of the 2010 tournament in Angola, where they were defeated by Egypt, added that he hopes the Eagles continue to produce excellent performances as the competition progresses.
“However, considering how Nigeria imposed themselves on Egypt, other teams have yet to show character, and one can only hope they maintain the same tempo as the tournament progresses.”
Nigeria’s Super Eagles will play Sudan in their second group game on Saturday, January 15 in Garoua.
