BET Awards 2021 Nominees And Winners Full List
BET Awards 2021 will be presented at a live, in-person event on Sunday night.
The ceremony is hosted by Taraji P. Henson, and this year’s theme is “Year of the Black Woman.” During the show,
Queen Latifah will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, which will air on BET, BET Her, Logo, MTV, MTV2, TV Land, and VH1 starting at 8 p.m. ET (tape-delayed on the West Coast) as well as streaming providers and international, which will be held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
Lil Baby and Kirk Franklin opened the show with their song “We Win,” from the soundtrack of Space Jam: A New Legacy.
The BET Awards, which took place last year, were one of the first big awards ceremonies to go place since the outbreak.
Producers tweaked the program to comply with safety regulations, with Insecure actress Amanda Seales hosting the event but no in-person audience. There were also a number of performances,
however not on a regular stage, that had the quality and feel of music videos rather than a typical live performance. Meanwhile, winners such as Beyoncé and Lizzo accepted their trophies via video conference.
Producers are considering a return to the live show format this year, with a fully vaccinated audience in attendance. Organizers stated that they would collaborate closely with Los Angeles County to support community vaccination efforts and ensure that COVID-19 protocols were followed.
“I am very pleased to be here among humans; we need each other,” Henson remarked after emerging onstage and addressing the live crowd, some of whom wore masks and others who did not.
Henson then named numerous Black women in the audience, including Issa Rae, Zendaya (who was wearing a purple mask), and Jazmine Sullivan, as well as “political trailblazers” like Maxine Waters. She also congratulated Stace Abrams and Kamala Harris
We’re going to be Black AF tonight,” she continued, revealing that she’ll be dressed as “some of my all-time favorite women” onstage. We’re also reclaiming our aesthetics tonight, with baby hairs, long blinged-out nails, gold hoops, and bamboo earrings, to name a few. We want all of you back, our Black guys, because we love you, regard you as kings, and most importantly, we need you.”
The nominees are competing in 21 categories to celebrate “creative expression and Black excellence in music, television, cinema, and sports.” As we approached the event,
Megan Thee Stallion and DaBaby are tied for first place with seven nominations each for the 2021 BET Awards.
They are competing for best female artist and best hip-hop artist, respectively, as well as album of the year.
Megan and DaBaby will also compete in the best collaboration category, where Megan’s “Cry Baby” starring DaBaby is nominated; Megan also received a best collab nomination with Cardi B for “WAP,” and DaBaby received four nominations in total (including for his own “Rockstar,” with Roddy Rich).
Cardi B and Drake each received five nominations, while Anderson.Paak, Bruno Mars, Chloe X Halle, and Chris Brown each received four.
Andra Day, Megan, Lil Nas X, H.E.R., DaBaby, DJ Khaled, Jazmine Sullivan, Migos, Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch, City Girls, Kirk Franklin, Lil Durk, Moneybagg Yo, Rapsody, Tyler, the Creator, and Tyler, the Creator are among the performers.
Swizz Beatz is also in charge of a homage to the late rapper DMX, who died in April at the age of 50. Griselda, Busta Rhymes, and Method Man are scheduled to play at the tribute.
