Bola Tinubu In Fresh Controversy Over Alleged Dual Citizenship

A photo of the bio-page of Mr Tinubu’s Guinea Conakry passport surfaced online after popular Nigerian investigative journalist David Hundeyin shared a copy on his Twitter handle.

iexclusivenews gathered that this revelation could jeopardize his political career. As dual citizenship disqualifies a Nigerian from the office of president. Which Bola Tinubu ran for and won in the February 25, 2023 election, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This online news outlet understands that the passport was discovered during a routine investigation into the financial assets of Nigerian politicians, according to an anonymous source who sent it to The Trent in early April 2023.

The source claims to have verified the passport’s authenticity, raising questions about Tinubu’s eligibility to hold public office in Nigeria.

However, iexclusivenews learnt that the Messages sent by The Trent to Tinubu’s media office for comments have not been replied.

Legal experts weigh in on the potential consequences of the revelation should it be proven true.

What Legal Experts Is Saying 

A person shall not be qualified for election to the office of the president if -(a) subject to the provisions of section 28 of this Constitution, he has voluntarily acquired the citizenship of a country other than Nigeria or, except in such cases as may be prescribed by the National Assembly, he has made a declaration of allegiance to such other country.

“If it is established that Mr. Tinubu indeed holds dual citizenship, he could face disqualification from holding public office, including his aspirations for the presidency,” says prominent criminologist and human rights activist Emeka Umeagbalasi.

Both Obi and Atiku claimed the election was rigged and have filed legal challenges. They chastised INEC for failing to electronically upload election results from polling units to the commission’s Results Viewing Portal (IReV), as required by Section 60 of the Electoral Act 2022.

This revelation creates yet another legal stumbling block for Tinubu. He could be charged with purgery because the forms he submitted under oath to INEC show that he did not declare any foreign citizenship on the form.
