Breaking: INEC Reinstates Soludo As APGA Candidate

Ahead of the announcement of the final candidate list for the Anambra Governorship Election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has produced a list of substituted candidates, which includes Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Soludo’s reenlistment, according to the commission, was the consequence of a court ruling.

Barr. Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, said in a statement that INEC met on Thursday and deliberated on a number of issues, including the nomination of candidates for the Anambra Governorship election scheduled for November 6, 2021.

According to him, Section 35 of the Electoral Act 2010 allows for the withdrawal/substitution of candidates in the Timetable and Schedule of Activities approved by the Commission on January 18, 2021. (as amended).

“As a result, by the Commission’s deadline of July 30, 2021, 11 of the 18 political parties had substituted seven Governorship and 11 Deputy Governorship candidates.

“The Commission was also served with a decision by the Court of Appeal (Kano Division) overturning the High Court of Jigawa State’s decision on APGA leadership and the nomination of its candidates for the Anambra Governorship election.

“However, as specified in the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the election, the final list of candidates will be announced on the 7th of October 2021,” Okoye noted.

Other parties that made substitutions include Accord, Action Alliance, African Action Congress AAC, African Democratic Party ADP, All Progressives Congress APC, which substituted its deputy candidate, Allied Peoples Movement APM, Nigeria Rescue Movement NRM, Peoples Redemption Party PRP, Social Democratic Party SDP, and Young Peoples Party YPP. APGA’s substitution was based on a court order.
