Gani Adams Chides DSS For Failing To Produce Igboho’s Aides In Court

Iba Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, has chastised the Department of State Services (DSS) for failing to produce all of Sunday Igboho’s 12 aides before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday.

iexclusive News Nigeria recall that secret police operatives broke into Sunday Igboho’s residence in Soka, Ibadan, killed three of his aides in a gunfight, and captured roughly 12 others.

On Thursday, the DSS stated that it only had three of the aides in custody, as opposed to the first 12 reported in the media.

In a statement, Gani Adam’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi, said the secret police’s actions were a complete violation of human rights.

Gani Adams cited a clause of the 1999 Constitution (as modified) that states that everyone detained must be transported to court within 24 hours of being arrested, and that their rights must be protected by the law.

The Yoruba leader said it was regrettable and unfortunate that the security agency had assumed covert authority, which reminded Nigerians of the military’s ignominious years when citizens’ rights were trampled.

“Our constitution is clear on every citizen’s rights, stating that everyone detained must be taken to court within 24 hours of his detention, and that such rights must be protected by legislation. It is terrible and bad that the DSS has assumed covert power, which reminds us of the military’s ignominious years when civilians’ rights were not protected by law,” he said.

As a result, the Department of State Services’ failure to bring Igboho’s aides in court for the second time was a clear display of lawlessness and egregious unfairness. 

According to our constitution, only the president and vice president of the United States enjoy that immunity. 

So, why is it so difficult for the DSS to let the constitution run its course as it does in other countries? he wondered.

Gani Adams, on the other hand, asked the DSS to be transparent in carrying out its duties, noting that the case against Igboho was so sensitive that the secret police could not claim to be above the law.

Sunday Igboho, is on trial in Benin Republic after being apprehended for two weeks while attempting to flee to Germany.
