INEC: Court Okays Request To Reconfigure BVAS

INEC – The Independent National Electoral Commission, has been given permission to modify the BVAS, it used for the presidential election, by the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC.

iexclusivenews reports that a three-judge panel of the court ruled unanimously that preventing the electoral body from reconfiguring the BVAS would have a negative impact on the upcoming governorship and state assembly elections.

It rejected objections raised by the Labour Party, LP, and its presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to INEC’s decision to reconfigure all BVAS.

According to the court, allowing the objections by Obi and his party, would amount to “tying the hands of the Respondent, INEC”.

However, iexclusivenews Nigeria reports that it mentioned that INEC had stated in an affidavit it submitted to the court. That the accreditation data contained in the BVAS would be stored. And easily retrievable from its accredited back-end server, guaranteeing that they could not be altered or lost.

It also pointed out that neither Obi nor LP had refuted the statements made in INEC’s affidavit, highlighting the fact that the Applicants had effectively admitted the statements since they had not been refuted.
