Kuje Prison: ISWAP Releases Video Of The Attack On Kuje Prison In Abuja

ISWAP stormed the facility at about 10:00 p.m., detonating explosives and opening live rounds on state agents guarding Kuje Prison, according to a senior government official.

“Suspected ISWAP attackers have just seized the prisons from our control,” an official said to Peoples Gazette. “They have destroyed the prison and we don’t know what they plan to do next.” 

The official could not immediately elaborate on the unfolding chaos at the prison, which holds suspects ranging from disgraced police chief Abba Kyari to infamous terror masterminds.

“All major, biggest terrorists, armed robbers, and kidnappers have escaped,” a top security source told The Gazette.

Residents in the areas have also confirmed hearing loud noises believed to be explosives and gunfire.

A spokesman for the Nigerian Prisons Service and the FCT police did not immediately return requests seeking details about the incident late Tuesday.

The attack comes as insecurity inundated President Muhammadu Buhari and his security chiefs.

Earlier on Tuesday, the administration confirmed an attack on the president’s convoy in his home Katsina state.

Buhari Queries Intelligence Mechanism At Kuje Prison

During his visit to the terrorist-attacked medium-security custodial center in Kuje on Wednesday, President Muhammadu Buhari spent nearly 30 minutes questioning the facility’s whole security setup.

According to a statement by Garba Shehu, Buhari’s media assistant, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Dr. Shuaib Mohammad Lamido Belgore, and the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa.

Briefed the President about the attack shortly after he arrived at the scene. The President was traveling to Senegal to attend a high-level summit.

He was then given a tour of the bombed-out area that he had entered through first, as well as the records office that had been destroyed by fire.

He was also told that the intruders had attacked every cell housing Boko Haram members. The President was informed that none of the 63 terrorists were located at the conclusion of the operation, but it was highlighted that the documents had been backed up, so they were not lost.

President Buhari, who was astounded by the scope and ingenuity of the attack as were the majority of Nigerians, asked:

“How did the prison’s defenses fail to stop the onslaught?” How many prisoners were housed there? How many of them are you able to identify? How many employees were on duty for you? How many of them have weapons? On the lookout, did guards stand watch? How did they act? Is the CCTV functional? ” I keep asking questions.

The security forces have apprehended 350 of the escapees, while approximately 450 are still missing.

The President was also informed that urgent efforts were being made to apprehend the remaining escapees.

President Buhari talked to reporters after touring some of the attack-affected areas and expressing displeasure with the intelligence system (and utilization).

“I am disappointed with the intelligence system. How can terrorists organize, have weapons, attack a security installation and get away with it? “

The President said at the conclusion of the visit that he was anticipating “a complete report” on the event. He was joined by Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Professor Ibrahim Gambari, the Chief of Staff.

“The Presidency wishes to use this opportunity to react to mounting criticism of the trip to Dakar, Senegal by the President and to stress that governments don’t stop working because nations face terrorist threats.”

“To cancel the trip to Senegal would mean that the terrorists are successful in calling the shots, something that no responsible government in the world will allow,” he added.
