Nigeria Protest: Tinubu, Sultan, Ooni, NSA, IGP In Emergency Meeting

(iexclusivenews) – As the planned ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest approaches, President Bola Tinubu convened an emergency closed-door meeting with top traditional rulers, security chiefs, and governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House in Abuja.

High-Level Delegation in Attendance

The meeting saw the presence of prominent figures, including the Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, who led the APC governors. Notable traditional rulers such as the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Saad Abubakar III, were also in attendance. Additionally, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, joined the discussions.

President Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, has urged discontented youths to reconsider the planned protest. To address their grievances, he proposed a bill to increase the minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000, which was swiftly passed by both chambers of the National Assembly and awaits his assent.

Security Concerns and Warnings

Military authorities have warned about the potential hijacking of the protest by unscrupulous elements, drawing parallels to recent unrest in Kenya.

The police have also cautioned against violent demonstrations, with Governor Uzodinma expressing concerns about a repeat of the EndSARS protests from October 2020.

Economic Hardship Fuels Protest

The protest, driven by economic hardship and rising inflation, has gained significant traction on social media. Scheduled to take place across all states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in August.

The protest highlights the severe economic challenges faced by Nigerians, exacerbated by the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of forex windows.

This high-stakes meeting underscores the government’s efforts to address the growing discontent and prevent potential unrest as the nation grapples with economic challenges.
