Organized Labour Gives Tinubu Ultimatum On New Minimum Wage

iexclusivenews – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have given President Bola Tinubu’s administration an ultimatum to conclude negotiations on a new minimum wage for civil servants by May 31, 2024.

The deadline was issued after a joint National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, where both labour unions expressed their dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of pressing national issues affecting Nigerian workers.

Key Demands and Grievances

The NLC and TUC listed several grievances, including:

• The recent hike in electricity tariff

• The ongoing negotiation of a new national minimum wage with the federal government

• The persistent non-compliance with the 2019 National Minimum Wage Act by some state governments in Nigeria

The unions lamented the government’s failure to comply with the 2019 National Minimum Wage Act and the deliberate delays in good faith negotiations, which have compelled them to give the government an ultimatum to complete the new national minimum wage fixing process by May 31, 2024.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

If the government fails to meet the demands outlined within the stipulated time frame, the NEC has authorized the leadership of the NLC and TUC to take appropriate actions, including:

• Mobilization of workers for peaceful protests and industrial actions

• Issuance of a joint two-week ultimatum to culpable state governments to avert industrial action

The NEC also condemned the illegal hike in electricity tariff, demanding its reversal and an immediate alleviation of the suffering of Nigerian workers and citizens.
