Samuel L Jackson, Danny Glover among those to receive honorary Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Thursday that actors Samuel L Jackson, Danny Glover, Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann, and actress-director Elaine May will receive honorary Oscars ahead of the Academy’s main 2022 event.

iexclusive News Nigeriareport that Jackson, May, and Ullmann will be presented with honorary statuettes, while Glover will be presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Governors Awards on January 15, the Academy stated.

“We are thrilled to give this year’s Governors Awards to four individuals who have made significant contributions to film and society,” Academy President David Rubin stated.

Glover, 74, first gained significant acclaim on the big screen in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 production of “The Color Purple,” before playing alongside Mel Gibson in the iconic “Lethal Weapon” cop buddy movies.

“Danny Glover’s decades-long support for justice and human rights demonstrates his commitment to recognising our common humanity both on and off the screen,” Rubin added.

Samuel L Jackson, 72, has been in scores of films and was nominated for an Academy Award for his unforgettable performance in Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” (1994).

He has starred in many Marvel films as former SHIELD boss Nick Fury, twirled a lightsaber as Jedi master Mace Windu in the “Star Wars” universe, and delivered an iconic phrase in “Snakes in a Plane.”

Ullmann, 82, made his international debut in Ingmar Bergman’s “Persona” and went on to collaborate with the Swedish filmmaker on other films. In the 1970s, she received two Academy Award nominations for best actress.

Rubin stated that her “courage and emotional candor have endowed spectators with profoundly moving movie representations.”

May, 89, rose to prominence as a comedian with Mike Nichols before earning Academy Award nominations for her screenplays for “Heaven Can Wait” and “Primary Colors.”

Additionally, she directed a number of films, including “A New Leaf,” “The Heartbreak Kid,” and “Ishtar.”

“Elaine May’s audacious, uncompromising approach to filmmaking as a writer, director, and performer resonates with moviegoers as loudly as ever,” Rubin added.
