Sunday Igboho Risks 21 Yrs In Jail Over ‘Doctored Passport’

Sunday Igboho may face up to 21 years in jail for using a Beninese passport before his trip was canceled.

iexclusive News Nigeria reported that Sunday Igboho and his wife, Ropo, were apprehended on Monday at Cotonou’s Cadjèhoun Airport.

The separatist, who is wanted in Nigeria, is reported to have submitted a forged travel permit to Benin immigration officers.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) stated on July 9 that Igboho had been put on a stop-list.

NIS notified Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) that he was attempting to get a new Nigerian passport as part of his escape preparations.

As the authorities discovered his plan, Sunday Igboho was said to have obtained an unauthorized Beninese passport.

After security officers learned Igboho’s true identity, Sunday Igboho and Ropo were detained on their route to Germany.

Mr. Tolulase, a legislator in Benin, told BBC Yoruba that the situation for the agitator is not looking good.

The legislator emphasized that, despite Benin’s tiny size, the rules are severely implemented.

“Take, for example, my passport; I’m from Benin but married an Ijebu woman. We have five children. She had two children in Nigeria and three in Benin.

“Only three of us have a Beninese passport; the other two and my wife do not. She will only be able to apply if we married officially in Benin. Even after the court wedding, the passport is not immediately issued.

She will have to wait several years and go through the procedures.

The first need is a National Identity Card. If you are not a citizen, the only option to obtain a passport is to lawfully marry a Beninoise.

“As you can see, it isn’t simple. As a result, if you obtain a forged one, you will be caught since you lack a National Identity Card. The specifics are connected.

“There must be a family name on the card. Three to five of your relatives must certify to the authorities that they know who you are.

“The court will issue the card after they testify, which may then be used to apply for a passport.

If such a document is tampered with, the penalty is 21 years in jail. This is a major offense. Not only will the owner of the false passport be punished, but everyone who knows about it will be penalized as well.

“On Chief Sunday Igboho, the Beninese government will conduct a thorough inquiry that will reveal everyone engaged in his passport acquisition,” Tolulase stated.

Meanwhile, the Yoruba Nation advocate’s attorneys are opposing his extradition to Nigeria, where he may face treason charges.

The federal government, its agencies, and the governors of the South-West have remained mute about Igboho’s experience.
