Lus Filipe Vieira, president of Benfica Football Club, has been detained for alleged fraud.

According to RTE, Vieira’s house, office, and the Novo Banco bank were all searched as part of an inquiry into potential financial irregularities.

 

According to Portuguese officials, Vieira’s business partner Jose Antonio dos Santos has also been detained, and three persons have been taken in for questioning as part of a fraud investigation.

 

According to a statement from Portugal’s Public Prosecution Service, they are looking into “deals and financings totaling more than €100 million, which may have resulted in huge losses for the state and some of the enterprises.”

 

According to the report, the investigation began in 2014, and possible offenses include “breach of trust, aggravated fraud, forgery, tax fraud, and money laundering.”

 

Vieira was re-elected president of Benfica in October of last year, continuing a reign that began in 2003..
