Trump protesters storm US Capitol building and halt election debate

iexclusive News Nigeria reports that angry supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol Wednesday, marching through the building, shouting and waving Trump and American flags, and forcing a halt to congressional deliberations over challenges to Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory. Senators were evacuated.

Some House lawmakers tweeted they were sheltering in place in their offices.

Demonstrators fought with Capitol Police and then forced their way into the building, not long after a rally near the White House, during which Trump egged them on to march to Capitol Hill.

US VP Mike Pence, in defiance of President Trump, said Wednesday that he will not intervene to stop the certification by Congress of Democrat Joe Biden’s election victory.

Trump told supporters in Washington Wednesday: “We will never give up, we will never concede … We will stop the steal.”

The joint session comes one day after voters went to the polls in Georgia and appear to have handed a pair of stunning victories to the Democratic Senate candidates.

Biden is due to be sworn in on January 20.
