Belgium and Denmark Qualify For The Euro 2020 Rounds of 16

Belgium maintained their unbeaten start to Euro 2020 with a 2-0 victory over Finland on Monday, finishing first in Group B. 

Denmark stunned Russia 4-1 to get to the last 16.

Belgium’s group stage performance at the European Championship could not have gone any better.

On Monday, the world’s top-ranked squad defeated Finland 2-0 to win Group B and join Italy and the Netherlands in qualifying with maximum points.

Finland finished third in its maiden major tournament appearance, pipped to the post by Denmark following its 4-1 victory against Russia in Copenhagen.

Finland, which would have finished second with a draw, fell behind in the 74th minute after Thomas Vermaelen’s header struck the post, deflected off the outstretched palm of Finland goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky, and over the line.

Romelu Lukaku gathered Kevin De Bruyne’s ball in the 81st minute to score his third Euro 2020 goal.

Belgium will face one of the four third-placed teams in Sunday’s round of 16 in Sevilla.

Denmark advances to the quarter-finals

Denmark qualified for the Euro 2020 last 16 on Monday with a dominant 4-1 win over Russia, which combined with Belgium’s win over Finland ensured they placed second in Group B.

Mikkel Damsgaard, Yussuf Poulsen, Andreas Christensen, and Joakim Maehle scored goals to give the Danes their first victory of the tournament on an euphoric evening at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium.

Denmark’s delirious fans pelted each other with beer as they banged in the goals that enabled them to end the group stage in a celebratory mood following Christian Eriksen’s mid-match collapse against the Finns in their opening tie.

On Saturday in Amsterdam, Denmark will meet Wales in the final 16.

Andreas Christensen and Joakim Maehle scored late goals to help Denmark defeat Russia 4-1 on Monday and earn a place in the round of 16.

Five teams advance to the knockout stage.

Five teams went to the round of 16 despite not having participated in the European Championship.

France, England, the Czech Republic, Sweden, and Switzerland are all guaranteed to advance, given they each have four points and will finish no lower than third in their respective groups.

Finland and Ukraine are now tied for third position in their respective rankings with three points following their final Group B and C games. That means that any team with four points is certain to finish in the top four of the third-place standings.

Finland and Ukraine are still on the list. Tuesday’s results in Group D and Wednesday’s results in Group E might leave those finishing third with just two points.
