Germany Defies UEFA’s Stance On LGBT Lights, Comes Out In Rainbow Colors

Germany put on a colorful display on Wednesday in defiance of UEFA’s rejection to light up Munich’s Euro 2020 stadium in rainbow colors, as political squabble over Hungary’s anti-LGBTQ law erupted.

iexclusive News Nigeria reports that as tensions rose on and off the field, EU leaders and Hungary traded barbs over a new law prohibiting LGBTQ educational information for children, with the EU president calling it a disgrace.

Munich city officials intended to illuminate the Allianz stadium in rainbow colors for Germany’s match versus Hungary in order to “send a visual message of solidarity” to Hungary’s LGBTQ minority.

However, UEFA denied the request and reiterated its stance on Wednesday.

Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA, claimed his organization could not bow to “populist” demands from politicians, but Germany argued UEFA conveyed the “wrong message.”

Just minutes before kick-off at Munich’s Allianz Arena, a fan dressed in a Germany shirt and holding a giant rainbow flag escaped security and entered the pitch, sprinting in front of the lined-up teams before being tackled and carried away by officials.

When the stadium’s doors opened earlier in the day, German campaigners wearing jackets bearing the slogan “rainbow to go” distributed rainbow flags to supporters.

Michael, 51, a German fan, told AFP he wished the stadium had been illuminated. “I don’t see it as political, and that would have been an excellent signal,” he explained.

However, Csongor, 39, a Hungary fan, stated that the rainbow had “It has absolutely nothing to do with football… This campaign, we believe, is directed against Hungary, the Hungarian national team, and the Hungarian government “‘.
