Army Investigates The Death Of A UNICAL Student killed By A Soldier

 

The Nigerian Army says it has opened an investigation into the alleged assassination of Gray Agbesu, a final-year student at the University of Calabar, by a soldier on July 9 in Calabar.

 

iexclusive News Nigeria reports that in a statement issued on Sunday, Army spokesman Onyema Nwachukwu said the soldier was arrested while attempting to flee the town to avoid arrest.

He is being kept in the custody of military police, adding that an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death has begun.

 

The commander of the 13 Brigade, according to the statement, has visited the location of the incident.

 

“The commander reassured them of the Nigerian Army’s resolve to ensuring that justice is served in the tragic tragedy. He also paid a visit to the deceased’s family, reiterating the army’s commitment to ensuring that the family receives justice for their son’s murder.

 

The commander also paid a visit to the Cross River State General Hospital, where the deceased’s remains was put, according to the statement.

 

Mr Nwachukwu went on to say that the army was still a disciplined and professional security force that would not tolerate unprofessional behavior among its troops.

 

He stated that the army will continue to work within the bounds of the law, reminding soldiers that any violation of civilians’ fundamental human rights would not be tolerated.

 

Mr Nwachukwu added, “We guarantee the family and the society that the soldier will be fully probed and subjected to judicial processes as considered suitable by the law.”
