A video of President Alpha Conde being detained by soldiers has also gone viral on social media. After that, he was thrown into a car and driven away.

The news came after citizens around the capital heard two hours of intense gunfire.

Mr Doumbouya stated that in the meantime, all land and air routes have been closed, and that citizens should stay at home and wait for future instructions from the administration.

Mr. Doumbouya also blamed rampant corruption and poverty for the coup, claiming that Mr. Conde had failed to keep his promises to Guineans.

Last October, Mr. Conde, 83, was re-elected to a third term in office. The continental body AU is yet to issue a statement on the situation.
