Kyiv in ‘defensive phase’ as Russian forces enter Ukraine’s capital

Vitaly Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, declared the Ukrainian capital to be in a “defensive phase” on Friday, as Russian forces continued their full-scale invasion.

The strike on Kyiv is part of a brazen attempt by Russian President Vladimir Putin to destabilize the Ukrainian government and replace it with his own own administration, according to Western sources.

Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s foreign minister, criticized Russia for “horrific missile strikes” that jolted the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early Friday morning.

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine cautioned people on Friday that Russian “sabotage gangs” had invaded Kyiv and asked them to be watchful.

Early Friday morning local time, Zelensky called a full mobilization, calling up conscripts and reservists across the country to confront invading Russian soldiers.

According to Zelensky, 137 Ukrainians were killed and 316 were injured on the first day of conflict.

On Thursday, Russian and Ukrainian troops struggled for control of military installations across the country.

The Russian army claimed to have damaged 74 military sites in Ukraine, including 11 airfields.

While a Ukrainian official stated that Russian forces had taken control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, located 90 kilometers north of Kyiv.

Zelensky has sworn to fight the invasion, claiming that Russia is now separated from the rest of the world by a “new iron barrier.”
