Ukraine – The bodies are sprawled as far as the eye can see over a peaceful tree-lined lane in Bucha.

All 20 are dressed in civilian clothes and are in various death postures.

Some lie face down on the tarmac, their eyes closed, staring at Ukraine’s dismal sky.

Three of them are tangled up on bicycles after their final journey.

While others have fallen close to bullet-riddled and smashed cars due to their waxy skin.

Another lies next to a yellow hoarding spraypainted with happy and sad emojis and the words “Live Fast”.

Russia’s hurried withdrawal from the region surrounding Kyiv is revealing new devastation by the day.

“All these people were shot, killed, in the back of the head,” mayor Anatoly Fedoruk told AFP.

Another 280 victims have been buried in mass graves in Bucha, he added. Adding that the bodies of entire families remain in shot-up cars.

Bucha, located northwest of Kyiv and surrounded by pine trees that run to Belarus, was a vision of quiet suburbia until the Russian invasion.

Moscow’s soldiers were only 25 kilometers (14 miles) away from encircling Kyiv after a month of furious warfare in towns like Bucha and adjacent Irpin.

The cost was utter devastation.

Building after building has gaping holes from shell blasts.

While crushed automobiles litter the streets, according to an AFP crew that arrived in Bucha.

After it had been cut off from the rest of the world for nearly a month.

Supermarkets, cafes, and homes have been burned or destroyed.

And the roof of a church has been damaged. Only a McDonald’s appears to be unaffected.

Bodies are strewn over the town, including near a railway station and along the side of a road.

However, the violence on this particular street looks to be more systemic.

The fatalities, all of whom looked to be men, are spread across several hundred meters of pavement littered with debris.

Sixteen of the twenty bodies were found on the pavement or the edge.

Three were lying in the center of the road, while another was lying on his side in the courtyard of a burned-out house.

Some people lie in groups, such as the two men, one in a green parka and the other in a black jacket, who are lying face up in a puddle next to each other.

Others perished on their own. The rider, wearing orange gloves and wearing a black balaclava. Is lying on his side with his bike on top of him, as though he has fallen and is unable to get up.

All of them were dressed casually in winter coats, jackets, or tracksuit shirts, jeans or jogging bottoms, and sneakers or boots.

‘Russians Are Running’

Because Ukrainian forces have only recently captured Bucha and begun delivering first aid on Saturday, the dead must remain unburied for the time being.

From the back of a green military van, soldiers distribute food and medicine to desperate survivors.

About 100 meters distant, another body is buried under a sheet.

It’s the first such delivery in almost a month, following Ukraine’s announcement on Saturday that Russian forces were retreating “rapidly” from Kyiv.

“They’re running,” Yuriy Biriukov, a senior member of Ukraine’s volunteer territorial defense team in charge of the assistance effort, said.

Bucha’s residents were “still very afraid, still shocked”, he added.

“Regular civilians cannot even imagine the conditions in which they lived during this one month, with artillery, without a supply of rood and water, without any possibility to get out.”

Topped with a green wooden cross, where four victims, including a kid, were buried.

The majority of those who have remained in Bucha is old.

A group of elderly women stirs pans of borscht and stew over a makeshift stove.

Next to a yellow Lada car with flat tires at an outdoor soup kitchen.

According to the residents, Russian soldiers went into flats on the top floor of their Soviet-era building.

Took belongings, and asked one elderly woman if she had any firearms.

Then, on Tuesday, they saw around 70 Russian armored vehicles rumbling out of town.
