2023: APC Won’t Give Southeast Presidential Ticket, Igbos Not United – Yakasai

Salihu Tanko Yakasai, a former Special Adviser to Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, has stated that the All Progressives Congress, APC, will not award its presidential ticket to a candidate from the Southeast.

The Kano State APC chairman stated that the party would prefer to choose a presidential candidate from the South.

He said that if the Southwest fails to secure the ticket, APC may opt for the Southsouth.

“As far as I am concerned, I have not seen any sign that the APC would nominate any candidate from the Southeast, and I do not believe that will happen,” Yakasai stated on Arise Tv’s morning show.

“Even if Southwest does not receive it, I don’t see the APC giving it to anyone from the Southeast, perhaps the South-South, but definitely not the Southeast.”

Yakasai also said that the governors and elites of the Southeast lacked unity in their campaign for the presidency.

He also stated that the region lacks the population necessary to create a Nigerian president.

“They keep protesting individually in the Southeast, but they haven’t come together as a group to convince the rest of the country that they are truly ready for this president. There is no unanimity among the governors, among the political elite, or among the followers. And, unfortunately for them, they lack the numbers, necessitating the assistance of one or two regions,” Yakasai remarked.

However, a public affairs specialist, Jare Jide claimed Yakasai just voiced his own opinion.

The APC National Congress, according to Jide, will decide which zone would produce the party’s presidential candidate.

However, he believes Nigerians will be surprised if a Southeasterner runs for the APC.

“I believe it is simply his view; the APC may come up with anything; let’s see what they come up with after their Congress.

“The APC has powerful politicians from the Southeast; in 2023, Nigerians may be surprised. So, let’s keep an eye on things as they develop,” he added.
