Equalizer 3: Denzel Washington Takes on the Italian Mafia in a Thrilling Action Sequel

The Equalizer franchise, starring Denzel Washington as the former CIA operative Robert McCall, has been a hit with audiences since its debut in 2014.

The films, directed by Antoine Fuqua, are based on a 1980s TV series of the same name, but have updated the story and the action for modern times.

In the first two films, McCall used his skills and resources to help people in need in Boston, while also dealing with his own past and enemies.

But in the third installment, which opens in theaters on Friday, McCall takes his fight to a new level and a new location: Italy.

Why Italy?

Fuqua, who has collaborated with Washington on four other films besides the Equalizer series, said that he had always wanted to take the character abroad.

He said that Washington, who is an international movie star and a lover of Italian culture, was also on board with the idea.

“We thought it would be nice to see a man of color in a story that’s more international. Why not take this character around the world? Luckily, Sony loved the idea,” Fuqua told The Associated Press.

Italy was the natural choice for the setting, as Washington visits the country every summer with his family and speaks some Italian. Fuqua said that Washington “just feels right there.”

How Italy Inspired the Story

The film’s plot revolves around McCall’s mission to stop a powerful crime syndicate known as the Camorra, which operates in Naples and other parts of southern Italy.

McCall gets involved when he meets a young woman named Lucia (played by Sophia Loren’s granddaughter Edoarda Ponti), who is being threatened by the mobsters.

McCall also reconnects with his old friend and former colleague Susan Plummer (played by Dakota Fanning), who is now a CIA analyst working on the same case.

Fuqua said that he wanted to show the real Italy, not just the tourist attractions. He said that he was inspired by the classic Italian cinema of Federico Fellini and others, as well as by the gritty realism of Martin Scorsese’s gangster films.

The film was shot in various locations across Italy, including Rome, Naples, and the Amalfi coast. Fuqua said that he was amazed by the beauty and diversity of the country, as well as by the hospitality and generosity of the people.

One of the highlights of the film was shooting at Cinecittà Studios in Rome, where many legendary filmmakers have worked before. Fuqua said that he felt honored to walk in their footsteps and to use their facilities.

Another memorable location was Atrani, a small village on the Amalfi coast, where McCall finds a sense of belonging and community. Fuqua said that he fell in love with the place and its people, who welcomed him and his crew with open arms.

“They would just bring us coffee and espresso. We didn’t even ask for it. Or big giant lemons because it was so hot. You fall in love with the people in a town like that,” he said.

The village also features a medieval church on top of a hill, which can only be reached by climbing over 700 steps.

Fuqua said that it was a challenge to carry all the equipment up there, but it was worth it for the stunning view and the emotional scene between McCall and Plummer.

What to Expect from Equalizer 3

Equalizer 3 promises to deliver more of what fans love about the franchise: thrilling action sequences, clever twists, and compelling characters.

Washington once again proves why he is one of the best actors of his generation, bringing depth and charisma to his role as McCall.

Fanning also shines as Plummer, who has a strong bond with McCall and helps him unravel the mystery behind the Camorra.

Ponti makes her debut as Lucia, who is brave and resilient despite her difficult situation.

The film also explores some themes that are relevant to today’s world, such as corruption, justice, loyalty, and identity.

McCall faces some moral dilemmas as he tries to balance his personal code with his professional duty. He also questions his own place in society and his relationship with his past.
