ABUJA, (iexclusivenews) – In a surprising turn of events, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially distanced itself from the Labour Party’s (LP) national convention that took place in Anambra State.
This declaration came directly from the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, during a press briefing in Nigeria’s capital on Thursday.
Mr. Oyekanmi expressed that the electoral body did not oversee the proceedings of the said convention, leaving many to wonder about the implications of such an absence.
The reasons behind INEC’s decision to not monitor the event remain undisclosed, sparking a wave of speculation and inquiry.

Initially scheduled to be held in Umuahia, Abia, the LP made a last-minute venue change to Nnewi, Anambra State.
The LP’s National Legal Adviser, Mr. Kehinde Edun, addressed the media, stating that the electoral commission had been properly notified regarding the alterations in both venue and date.
Mr. Edun emphasized the party’s autonomy in selecting their convention location, mentioning previous considerations including Benin before settling on Nnewi.
“We are at liberty to pick any venue of our choice. We only need to inform INEC about the change in venue and the time,” he affirmed.
Under Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, political entities are mandated to provide INEC with a minimum of 21 days’ notice prior to any convention, congress, or meeting.
This regulation is also applicable to sessions convened for merging purposes, the election of executive committees, other governing bodies, or the nomination of candidates.
The unfolding situation raises questions about the adherence to electoral guidelines and the potential ramifications of INEC’s non-participation in the Labour Party‘s convention.
