24 Dead As 2 Buildings Collapsed In Anambra.

Iexclusive News Nigeria reports that two distinct buildings under construction in Anambra State collapsed, killing 24 persons.

In the early hours of Wednesday, July 7, a two-story structure fell in Amikwo village, Awka, the state capital, while another two-story buildings collapsed in Oko, Aguata Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday, July 6 which resulted in the death of many people.

Four people were said to have been trapped inside the debris in the Oko building but were rescued with minor injuries, while roughly 20 people were said to have averted death in the Amikwo building.

The Amikwo building apparently fell at 2 a.m., collapsing on a portion of a neighbouring two-story structure that was occupied.

Despite the fact that no one was killed, the sad incident resulted in the wastage of millions of naira in construction materials.

According to reports, the first floor of the two-story building slid into the ground, while the rest of the structure collapsed and is now leaning against a nearby two-story building with tenants.

Amikwo Building

While blaming the collapse on poor mixture and reinforcement, the inhabitants said that many of them waited outside till daylight out of dread of the unknown.

Officials from the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority have sealed the Amikwo building (ACTDA).

Ven Amaechi Okwuosa, Managing Director of the ACTDA, who confirmed the incident, said the structure had been under development for the previous ten years and was scheduled for demolition in 2018.

“Although the developer had commenced demolition of the building, the right equipment was not used, hence the collapse,” he said.

While thanking God that no one was hurt, Venerable Okwuosa emphasized that there are many more such structures that have been identified by their engineers.

Okwuosa promised that the agency will ensure the structural integrity of buildings constructed in the state capital territory.

Chike Maduekwe, the Executive Chairman of the Anambra Physical Planning Board, blamed the Oko event on a structural integrity compromise.

He stated that the structure had been locked since then, and that development partners had been summoned for questioning.
