John Legend Launches New Music NFT Platform
John Legend, Grammy-winner, American singer-songwriter is solidifying his position among the ranks of celebrities flocking to the world of nonfungible tokens (NFTs), helping to launch a new NFT platform for musicians and other entertainers.
OurSong is a platform that allows artists to tokenize and sell their work, rewarding buyers with benefits such as access to unreleased music and private chatrooms.
“Everyone can now turn stories, music, photography, and any other type of art into NFT trading cards called Vibes,” according to the platform. “Vibes give you access to private chat communities where you can meet like-minded people and unlock exclusive updates.”
Legend will serve as Chief Impact Officer, in charge of attracting new artists and their fan bases.
Legend told Bloomberg that, while he spends the majority of his mental energy thinking about music, he hopes the platform will help to connect people.
“When I think about what I want to do, I try to get involved in projects that I believe will help to connect the world.”
Chris Lin, cofounder of digital music streaming service KKBOX, will serve as the new company’s CEO, among other well-known names associated with the project.
Kevin Lin, cofounder of the live video streaming platform Twitch, and Matt Cheng, founder of early-stage venture capital firm Cherubic Ventures, will also join the team.
Lin claims that the platform will not require users to have a cryptocurrency wallet.
According to the Terms of Service, onlyll OurSongDollars can be used to purchase Vibes (OSD).
“You can deposit OSD in OurSong by purchasing it with a credit card, debit card, wire transfer, or USD Coin deposited in your Circle’s blockchain wallet,” the website says.
The musician and his co-founders did not provide any financial information about the project.
This is Legend’s second foray into the world of NFTs. Legend, along with Doja Cat and Whitney Houston, was announced as a partner of the “OneOf” NFT platform in May 2021.
He isn’t the first celebrity to dabble in NFTs and cryptocurrency, though most celebrities prefer to mint their own collection rather than launch an entire platform.
One notable exception is Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, who in April 2021 will launch a sports-focused NFT platform called “Autograph.”
Although many celebrities are eager to get involved in the space, such as Paris Hilton, who recently announced her first NFT collection with Superplastic, others are less enthusiastic.
Kanye West most recently dragged the NFT world in an Instagram post, writing, “Do not ask me to do a f*cking NFT.”
