Anambra Election: Governorship Candidates Sign Peace Accord

Thursday, candidates for the Anambra governorship election signed a peace accord in Awka, the state capital.

The ceremony was attended by Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who was facilitated by the National Peace Committee.

iexclusive News Nigeria reports that the National Peace Committee, chaired by former President Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd), and the Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Bishop Mathew Kukah, were also in attendance at the ceremony.

Several ‘gunmen’ attacks have recently occurred in Anambra and other southeast states, raising concerns about the security of the elections.

The proscribed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) has also threatened the sanctity of the Anambra election if its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is not released from DSS detention.

iexclusive News Nigeria recall that the IPOB in the Southeast has declared a seven-day sit-at-home protest beginning November 5 if Kanu is not released.

The sit-in is expected to begin on the eve of the governorship election in Anambra State.

The federal government, on the other hand, has increased security in the state, promising a free and fair election.

The Senate minority leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, urged voters to vote on Tuesday, insisting that the elections would be free and fair.

In addition, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Baba, has since assured the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, of its commitment to securing electoral processes, protecting personnel, critical national infrastructure, and INEC materials ahead of the November 6, 2021, governorship election in Anambra State.
