England advanced to the Euro 2020 final against Italy thanks to Harry Kane’s extra-time goal against a shattered Denmark on Wednesday. It was England’s first major tournament final since the 1966 World Cup.

After Kasper Schmeichel saved his contentious penalty in the 104th minute in front of nearly 65,000 people at Wembley, Kane scored the follow-up.

Mikkel Damsgaard’s fantastic free-kick gave Denmark a 30th-minute lead, but an own goal from Simon Kjaer brought England level before half-time, and their tired opponents gradually faded as a force.

Denmark’s fairytale run to the semi-finals, the farthest they have progressed in a tournament since winning Euro 92, comes to an end with defeat.
