Taiwan: U.S.-China Tensions Flare As Pelosi Leaves Taiwan

Taiwan — China escalated its rhetoric while U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) visited Taiwan on Wednesday, calling her trip “very dangerous and stupid” and blasting the Biden administration for not stopping it.

“The U.S. government had the responsibility to prevent her trip. Yet they say one thing and do another.” 

iexclusivenews reports that they have no integrity, according to a front-page editorial published Wednesday by the People’s Daily, the official organ of the ruling Communist Party.

The speaker’s departure for South Korea came just a day before China set to undertake its largest anti-Taiwan drills in more than a quarter-century.

Before departing, a composed but determined Pelosi reiterated past remarks about the world having a “choice between democracy and despotism.”

“America’s determination to preserve democracy, here in Taiwan and around the world, remains ironclad,” she said in a short speech during a meeting with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.

China claims Taiwan as its territory and prohibits Taiwanese officials engaging with foreign governments.

According to the Biden administration and Pelosi, the US remains committed to the so-called one-China policy, which recognizes Beijing but allows for informal interactions and defense links with Taipei.

Nonetheless, China unleashed a series of harsh statements after the American team arrived in Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, late Tuesday.

The president of Taiwan, Tsai, vehemently opposed Beijing’s military drills, which will partially take place in Taiwanese waters.

“Facing deliberately heightened military threats, Taiwan will not back down,” Tsai said at her meeting with Pelosi. “We will firmly uphold our nation’s sovereignty and continue to hold the line of defense for democracy.”
